Postgraduate Diploma in the Theory of Psychodynamic Counselling
This one-year course is open to counsellors who have completed a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling, either at ECS or elsewhere. It provides an opportunity for counsellors to deepen their understanding of psychodynamic theory, and to apply this knowledge to their clinical practice.
The course can offer excellent Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for therapists, and can also be used as part of the tutored hours requirement for those applying for accreditation with BACP as independent psychodynamic counsellors.
Course structure and time commitments
The seminars take place between 2.00pm and 7.00pm on Thursdays, for three terms of eleven weeks.
The first seminar of the day is Advanced Clinical Concepts in Psychodynamic Practice, and covers areas such as:
- Sexuality and gender
- Personality disorders
- Unconscious communication in couple relationships
- Eating disorders and addictions
- Psychoanalytic understanding of violence and suicide
- Perversions
- Assessment of clients for therapy
- Management, ethical and frame issues
The second seminar of the day centres around the Theory and Evolution of British Object Relations Theory. This seminar follows the historical disagreements and consequent development of object relations theory arising out of some of the most influential theoretical papers from the past sixty years.
Clinicians studied in this seminar include:
- Winnicott
- Bion
- Klein
- André
- Green
- Kernberg
- Perversions
- Symington
- Bollas
- Rosenfeld
- Fairbairn, Balint and Guntrip
The third seminar of the training day is on Advanced Clinical Issues, and helps participants to apply the theoretical concepts discussed in seminars one and two, to their clinical practice. Each week a case presentation is made, and a process report of clinical work is discussed in detail by the seminar group, in light of the advanced psychodynamic concepts being taught during the course.
Written work
Participants are required to write one 3,000 word, and one 5,000 word paper during the course. The topics for these papers are agreed with the seminar leaders, and are based on the taught subject matter of the course. It is expected that participants will be able to assimilate and critique psychodynamic theory, and its application to their clinical practice.
Fees
The fees for this course are currently £2,250 for the year*. It is possible to pay this in three instalments.
